Trip leaders' checklist - Sydney University Bushwalkers

Formality is generally kept to a minimum in SUBW so that we can all spend as much time as possible going bushwalking. However, please keep in mind the following important points should you choose to lead a trip:

1. It is your responsibility to make sure that everyone coming on the trip is a member of Sydney University Bushwalkers. This is essential for insurance purposes. Once a trip is posted on the website or the subw-announce email list, it automatically becomes a club trip. All members are covered for personal accident and public liability. However, should you choose to take non-members on such trips, this is at your own (and the club committee's!) risk. The club Secretary can be contacted for membership forms and lists when in doubt.

2. The club is not a tour operator. As such, you have the right to refuse to take anyone on a trip if you think that they are lacking in experience or otherwise.

3. If you do not have anyone else to notify about your trip, then please send an email to subw-notify@anatomy.usyd.edu.au with your contact details, the names of trip participants, intended route and expected time of return. Remember to send an email to the same address when you return so that we know you're OK.

4. Before leaving, make sure that all the participants' friends and relatives have your contact details should the party be late returning.

5. Familiarise yourself with the club's Search and Rescue Policy and ensure that all participants are aware of this.

6. Familiarise yourself with the club's OH&S Policy and ensure that all participants are aware of this.

7. Should you require gear for your trip, it is your responsibility to make sure that all participants are kitted up. If you come across faulty gear which was damaged before or during the trip, it is your responsibility to document this by entering it in the gear locker log book and notifying the Gear Officer, particularly if this involves canyoning gear! If you do not have access to the club gear locker, then contact the club Gear Officer.
